Colour and Cotton hand dyed thread is six-stranded cotton embroidery floss made for cross stitch, embroidery, and other needlework projects. It can be used in place of traditional embroidery floss, whether you want to substitute one charted color, convert an entire project, or create a palette of your own.
The gentle color changes along each strand add depth, movement, and subtle variation to your stitching. As the shades shift from stitch to stitch, your finished piece develops a beautifully individual look that cannot be replicated exactly, making every project feel truly one of a kind.

Hand Dyed by Colour and Cotton
Our cotton embroidery threads are hand dyed in small batches by the Colour and Cotton team in St. Louis, Missouri. Each shade is created to bring beautiful depth, subtle variation, and distinctive color to cross stitch and embroidery projects.
With individual colors, coordinated palettes, gradients, limited editions, and conversion resources, you can find everything from an easy DMC substitution to an entirely new palette for your next needlework project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Colour and Cotton threads colorfast?
Colour and Cotton threads are not guaranteed colorfast. We recommend avoiding washing finished needlework whenever possible. When washing is necessary, use cool water and a gentle, color-safe detergent, and test the thread first.
How many yards per skein?
8 yards
Why are some colors marked as limited edition, or are no longer available?
Over nearly ten years of dyeing, we've created hundreds and hundreds of colors using various techniques. Periodically we discontinue slower-selling colors, or those whose dye formulations shift too far. We also intentionally created limited edition colors to add to your stash for variety!
Can I request a custom thread conversion?
Unfortunately due to the volume of requests we receive, we are not able to offer custom conversion services for specific patterns. But we encourage you to download our free DMC to Colour and Cotton conversion guide!
Will different dye lots match?
We try our very best to achieve consistent colors, but the nature of hand dyed means that colors will always vary a bit from batch to batch. We always recommend purchasing all thread needed at once for your project to ensure consistent dye lots.
