Learn to Cross Stitch

Welcome to your new favorite hobby...cross stitch is one of the easiest ways to start your needlework journey. It’s relaxing, creative, and wonderfully forgiving—no complicated techniques, no expensive tools. Just tiny stitches and easy-to-source materials that slowly come together to create a piece of art.

Cross stitch is a great place to start if you’re new to stitching. It mainly uses a single stitch—the classic “X”—with an occasional backstitch added for outlines or fine details. It’s often used as a decorative technique to personalize or embellish fabric, from clothing to home décor. Most cross stitch is done on fabrics called aida or evenweave linen, which is specially woven with an easy-to-see grid. This structure helps you place each stitch neatly and evenly, making the process much more approachable for beginners.

  • A Productive Hobby

Tired of spending evenings scrolling on your phone? Cross stitch keeps your hands busy and you can easily stitch while listening to music, a podcast, a TV show, or while chatting with friends and family.

  • A Creative Outlet

Watching your design come to life with each tiny stitch is extremely satisfying. You can exercise your creativity while still following the framework of the pattern, and you know the result will be lovely.

  • Calming and Meditative

Studies show that the soothing and repetitive nature of needlework can provide positive benefits to our mental health. Stitching is grounding and calming, and is a wonderful way to wind down in the evenings.

  • The Supplies You'll Need

It doesn't take much to get started! To begin cross stitching, you'll want to gather the following supplies:

    • A tapestry needle with a blunt tip
    • Embroidery floss (also called thread)
    • Stitching fabric such as aida cloth, evenweave or linen
    • Pattern of the design you wish to stitch
